Physicians working in pediatric emergency care services must be able to provide initial care to pediatric patients in a comprehensive, fast, accurate and safe manner.

For this reason, knowledge must be constantly updated through programs aimed at reinforcing their functions, both in recognizing and initially resolving emergencies, as well as in focusing, orienting and correctly directing situations in the face of urgent pathologies.

The updating of the Pediatric Emergency Department physician should include the updating of diagnostic and therapeutic techniques such as airway management, peripheral and central line approach or immobilization of traumatic and burned patients, which guarantee a quick and safe assistance in all pediatric ages. In addition, it should include organizational aspects of pediatric emergency services and the provision of personnel and material, with emphasis on their differential characteristics.

This program offers the physician the possibility to take an updated Internship program on Pediatric Emergencies, establishing the keys for the care of the critically ill patient and the approach to the different diagnostic and treatment techniques of emergency care in the pediatric age. In this way, after 3 weeks, they will be able to respond adequately to the evolution of scientific and technological knowledge, and to the evolution of his/her field of action in the different health systems, by means of adequate training.

General Objectives

Provide emergency care to improve the child's prognosis and family care
Master the latest techniques, modern scientific postulates and application of state-of-the-art technologies in Pediatric Emergency Medicine
Develop advanced procedures for pediatric patients attending the Emergency Department

Specific Objectives

Identify the different elements of the equipment in the pediatric emergency department
Identify the signs and symptoms of the main apparently lethal syndromes, as well as perform the recognition of the critically ill child
Update the latest recommendations for the performance of basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers and complete upper airway clearance of a foreign body
Review the different routes of drug administration and their indication in each case
Establish Capnography and Pulse Oximetry procedures, and review indications for oxygen therapy in pediatric patients according to the latest scientific evidence
Determine the main aspects of pediatric airway establishment, rapid intubation sequence, difficult airway and new facilitator devices
Establish the phases, characteristics and development of the sedoanalgesia procedure
Incorporate intraosseous puncture as a frequently used technique in pediatric emergency departments
Review the protocols for dealing with infant deaths
Describe the main signs and symptoms of cardiac pathologies, arrhythmias, syncope, heart failure and congenital heart disease
Incorporate frequently used techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac pathologies, such as rapid ECG reading, electrical cardioversion for the management of tachyarrhythmias and cardiac defibrillation
Describe the main signs and symptoms of airway pathologies in children, and the different diagnostic and therapeutic techniques such as airway aspiration, thoracentesis and chest tube placement, forced spirometry and bronchodynamic test
Incorporate into medical practice the priorities of evaluation and treatment of the traumatized child and the characteristics of pediatric patients
Analyze age-specific protocols for pediatric patients with fever
Establish the correlation between the different types of brain damage and their clinical manifestations
Learn about the protocol for the care of abused children
Increase the ability to manage the acutely intoxicated child or adolescent
Determine the management procedures for children with anaphylactic reactions and their severity, clinical manifestations and diagnostic procedures
Describe the main signs and symptoms of pathologies of neurological etiology in children
