Dr. Francisco Javier Gómez-Ulla de Irazazábal is an eminent Ophthalmologist with an extensive professional career in the clinical, teaching and research fields who has been awarded the Arruga Prize and the Castroviejo Prize by the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology. 

Specializing in Macula, Retina and Vitreous, his excellent skills as a Doctor and as a Manager led him to hold senior management positions in hospitals that are at the forefront in this field and also to found the Instituto Oftalmológico Gómez-Ulla in Santiago de Compostela.  

In parallel, he developed an intense career linked to the study of Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Ocular Diabetes and the development of expert systems for the recognition of fundus images and their automatic diagnosis. Author of more than 130 articles in national and international journals, he has published 8 books focused on Diabetic Retinopathy, new methods of Retinal Examination and Intraocular Anti-inflammatory and Antiangiogenic Agents.
